How it works

  • Swipe right on a name you like and left on one you don't.
  • Each deck has 20 names, and a name you've already seen won't come back.
  • Tap a card to see how popular the name has been from 1950 to 2025.
  • Tap the speaker to hear it said out loud.

Swipe together on one phone

Enter both your first names. One of you swipes a deck of 20, then hands the phone over. The other swipes the same 20 names without peeking, and then you see the names you both liked. There's nothing to sync and no links to send, and nothing breaks when you open the app again.

Start with names people actually use

Decks begin with well known names, and you choose how unusual to go: the top 250, the top 1000, the top 3000 or every name in the data. You can filter by girl, boy or either, by first letter, by length, or by style.

  • Popular: in the top 1000 this year.
  • Classic: names that stayed in the top 500 for most decades.
  • Rising: names that grew fast over the last ten years.
  • Rare: names few babies get.

The story behind each name

Every name has its own page with a chart of how many babies in the US got that name each year, its rank this year and the year it peaked. The app doesn't make up meanings or origins. The numbers come straight from the public data: US Social Security Administration baby names from Social Security card applications, 1950 to 2025.

Sibling check

Already have a child? Add their name and see simple notes on how the two names sit together: first letters, endings, length and roughly how many syllables.

Favorites and a shared shortlist

Keep a list of favorites and a shared shortlist of matches. When you're ready, share the list as plain text with family.

Questions

Is Baby Names free?

Yes. It's free and supported by ads. A small banner sits at the bottom of the swipe, favorites and name screens. A full screen ad may show now and then when you start a new deck, never during your first session and never before your matches. A one time purchase removes all ads, and you can restore it on a new phone.

Does it need the internet?

No. All the name data is inside the app, so it works without a connection, and your swipes stay on your phone.

Where do the names come from?

From the US Social Security Administration's public baby name data, from Social Security card applications between 1950 and 2025.
